Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Pharmacists Module 3, 2026
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that presents in childhood with symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity and/or inattention. The notion that ADHD is a disorder of childhood prevailed until the turn of the century, but researchers have now documented the persistence of symptoms into adulthood in 60 to 70 % of patients.
ADHD is a costly, chronic disorder with a significant impact on the quality of life for patients and their families. The consequences of untreated ADHD in children can range from poor self-esteem and academic difficulties to clinically relevant mental health disorders. At the same time, problems with planning, task initiation, task completion, impatience and impulsivity can cause numerous work-related and interpersonal problems in adults.
In February 2025, the South African Society of Psychiatrists (SASOP) and the Psychiatry Management Group (PsychMG) released updated guidelines for managing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents. These guidelines were preceded by the SASOP/PsychMG guidelines for adult ADHD, which were published in 2017.
This module discusses ADHD in children and in adults and focuses on the guideline-recommended pharmacological treatment options for the disorder in children, adolescents and adults.
