• An Update On Osteoporosis For The Pharmacist: Module 4, 2026

Osteoporosis is a significant health concern in South Africa, with approximately one in three women and one in five men at risk of developing the condition during their lifetime. Yet, many individuals remain unaware of declining bone mineral density and increasing bone fragility until a fracture occurs—sometimes after relatively minor trauma. The consequences can be serious, including pain, reduced mobility, loss of independence and increased mortality.

This module explores the updated 2025 guidelines from the National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (NOFSA), including revised fracture-risk assessment thresholds to improve the identification of patients at increased risk and support timely treatment decisions.

This module highlights how pharmacists can make a meaningful difference in osteoporosis care.

This CPD module provides an overview of the skeletal system and bone physiology as background information before discussing osteoporosis and the 2025 NOFSA guideline update.
