Prevention of cancer is one of the most significant public health challenges of the 21st century. The staff in the community pharmacy can raise awareness of the more common cancers and the importance of early detection of cancers. The front-shop member of staff in the pharmacy is well positioned to promote prevention of cancer through tobacco, obesity, alcohol and ultraviolet risk awareness. This module on cancer discusses how cancer cells differ from normal cells, what the risk factors are for developing cancer and how health and lifestyle changes may help reduce a person’s risk of cancer. It provides practical information to support healthcare workers in their duty to recognise and refer patients with ‘red flag’ cancer symptoms. The module also looks at treatment options for cancer and ways to support the cancer patient.
